19 Aug Do SSL Certificates Affect Search Rankings?
Ever since in 2014, Google announced that going the HTTPS way and adding an SSL 2048-bit key certificate on your website will boost the ranking, it has caused a lot of chaos. This move was initiated by Google to protect its users and make them feel secure online. However, it has been found that only 1.9% of the websites have been redirected to their SSL version. Business owners are still wondering as to how exactly the rankings will be affected. Let us find out what exactly the Secure Socket Layer ( SSL) certificate means and how it will affect your ranking, through this article.
What is the need of redirecting your website to SSL version?
Although HTTPS are secure enough, installing an SSL certificate will ensure that your data between the server and the browser is much more secure and private. This comes handy, especially when secure information such as your card details or other personal information needs to be shared online. HTTPS along with SSL ensure that such information remains totally private and secure. Although this feature gives only a minor boost to the SERP’s , Google encourages website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to ensure they are secure online.
The next question that is bugging the website owners is to know which SSL certificate is right for them. True, though all SSL certificates have the same function to encrypt and secure the data, they are not the same. The onus is on you to find the right certificate that will make your website secure.
There are basically three types of SSL certificates to choose from depending upon your need.
• Extended Validation or EV- It is a 2048 bit encryption, which can be used to secure and e-commerce website or websites that collect personal data from a user.
• Organization Validation or OV- This can be 128, 256 or 2048 bit encryption certificate that can be used to secure e-commerce websites or sites that collect personal information.
• Domain Validation or DV- These certificates are affordable and can be used for testing websites, internal sites and non e-commerce websites.
It is however recommended that an extended version be used for an exclusive e-commerce website.
After choosing the right SSL certificate, you may also update your website with HHTPS in CDN Webmaster tools, robots.txt, and Google Analytics and install any SSL certificate on CDN. Along with this, you will also have to update your social media links, canonical tags, email marketing software link and move all your social media share counters. You may then update your website address in Google tools.
Once all the above procedures are carried out, you will have to perform a test by submitting your website in Qualy Lab tool. It will scan your website thoroughly and check if your SSL certificate has been installed properly. After the check is through it will give you a grade.
If all the above instructions are carried out diligently and SSL certificates are installed properly, Google will definitely consider it and rank your website. Although, currently it may have a small impact, several changes in Google’s documentation ensure that it will have positive effects on your rankings later. So, go ahead and make the switch to HTTPS now to enjoy its benefits.
